# The Legend of Phaya Yommarat (Yamaraj)

The Legend of Phaya Yommarat Executing His Own Father to Uphold Justice.

Another legend of Phaya Yommarat tells that, in a previous life before the time of the Buddha, he was believed to have been born as a human being. He was the leader of a village community and a man of knowledge. Whenever unrest arose within the village, he took responsibility for restoring order and administering justice. On one occasion, a murder took place in the village. However, no one admitted to committing the crime out of fear of punishment, as the offense carried the death penalty and had to be repaid with one's own life. As the ruler responsible for maintaining order, he conducted an investigation, but no one confessed. He then used the knowledge and skills he had acquired to cast enchanted powder into the air. Miraculously, footprints believed to belong to the culprit appeared. Following the trail, he eventually discovered that the owner of those footprints was none other than his own father.

He was deeply saddened and did not know what to do. After giving the matter the fairest consideration possible, he decided to sentence his own father to death. He then left the village and wandered from place to place until he died alone. This showed that his sense of justice was beyond compare, for if he had told no one, no one would ever have known the truth. Moreover, he could have remained the village leader and continued to live a comfortable life without having to wander alone in hardship. After his death, his spirit was honored for its fairness and justice. The celestial beings therefore reached a consensus and appointed him to the position of Phaya Yommarat.
