Luang Pho Ngern Buddhachoti, whose birth name was “Ngern,” was born on Friday, 19 September 1805, during the Year of the Ox. He was a native of Bang Khlan, Bang Khlan District, Phichit Province. His father was named U and his mother was named Fak. He had six siblings and was the fourth child in the family.
Luang Pho Ngern lived during the reign of King Rama I. When he was five years old, a teacher named Chuang took him to Bangkok. Once he was old enough to begin his studies, Ajarn Chuang brought him to Wat Tong Pu, now known as Wat Chana Songkhram. He continued his education there and, at the age of twelve, was ordained as a novice monk. Upon reaching the age for full ordination, he entered the monkhood at Wat Chana Songkhram and received the monastic name “Buddhachoti.”
After spending three years in the monkhood, Luang Pho Ngern became a disciple of Somdet Phutthachan of Wat Rakhang Khositaram, where he studied sacred knowledge and Vipassana meditation, particularly in the disciplines of Metta Maha Niyom (loving-kindness and popularity) and Kongkraphan Chatri (invulnerability). Later, Luang Pho Ngern returned to reside at Wat Bang Khlan (Wat Hiranyaram) in his hometown of Phichit. His reputation grew rapidly, and he became one of the most respected monks of his time. Even Prince Chumphon Khet Udomsak was among his lay disciples.

Luang Pho Ngern was later appointed as a preceptor and was bestowed an ecclesiastical title as a senior Vipassana master. He died of old age at 5:00 a.m. on Friday, 20 September 1919, at Wat Wang Tago in Bang Khlan District, Phichit Province. He was 111 years old and had spent 90 years in the monkhood.
