The Legend of Phaya Yommarat Executing His Own Father to Uphold Justice
One of the traditional legends surrounding Phaya Yommarat tells that, in a previous life before the time of the Buddha, he was born as a human being. He served as the leader of a village community and was known as a learned and knowledgeable person. Whenever unrest or disputes arose within the village, he was responsible for restoring order and delivering judgments in matters of justice.
On one occasion, a murder occurred within the village. However, no one was willing to confess to the crime because the punishment was severe and carried the death penalty. As the village leader responsible for maintaining justice, he conducted a thorough investigation, but no one admitted guilt.
Using the knowledge and abilities he had acquired through his studies, he performed a ritual involving sacred powder and cast it into the air. It is said that the footprints of the guilty person then appeared. When he followed the trail, he discovered that the owner of those footprints was none other than his own father.
The discovery caused him immense sorrow and inner conflict. After carefully reflecting with complete impartiality and a commitment to justice, he ultimately decided that the law must be applied equally and ordered the execution of his own father.
After carrying out the judgment, he left the village and wandered alone for the remainder of his life until his death. This act became a symbol of his extraordinary fairness and integrity. Had he chosen to conceal the truth, no one would ever have known who the real culprit was. He could have continued living comfortably as the village leader without hardship. Instead, he chose justice above personal interest and accepted a life of solitude.
According to the legend, when he passed away, his spirit was honored for its unparalleled commitment to righteousness and fairness. The celestial beings, recognizing his virtue, unanimously elevated him to the position of Phaya Yommarat, the Lord of Justice and Judge of Souls.
This story remains one of the traditional legends associated with Phaya Yommarat and has contributed to the deep faith and reverence many people have for him. It highlights the qualities of justice, integrity, and impartial judgment that are commonly associated with his character.
According to traditional beliefs regarding the worship of Phaya Yommarat, devotees believe that ghosts, spirits, and malevolent entities will not dare to disturb those under his protection. Worshippers are also believed to gain an aura of authority and dignity that commands respect. Those who harbor ill intentions, act dishonestly, or are driven by jealousy are believed to ultimately suffer the consequences of their own actions.
In addition, it is traditionally believed that those who regularly pay respect to Phaya Yommarat may enjoy good health, longevity, and protection from illness. Those who serve in government positions or conduct their business with honesty, integrity, and fairness are believed to receive prosperity, success, and increasing happiness throughout their lives.
